Drug Rehab Success - Mike's Story
"My name is Mike and I am from a place called Chautauqua, NY
which is a small rural/tourist community just south of Buffalo.
Today, I am a successful executive at one of the largest drug
rehabilitation facilities in the world. I am happy, confident and
exceeding in life, but it wasn't always this way.
I had a great upbringing with loving parents. I am the second to
the youngest, out of six children. My father was the local town
policeman for over 20 years until his sudden death in 1988. My
mother was a fantastic homemaker, the swimming coach at the school
and after all of the kids were out of school she went to college.
She got her degree and became a teacher in the same school both her,
Dad and all us kids went to. All of a sudden at age 30, I got a tap
on the shoulder from mom. She had come to see me where I was living
in Florida. She told me she had two plane tickets home, one for me,
one for her. Why? I was a drug addict. I had been taking and
eventually became seriously hooked on prescription pain medication
or opiates. For nearly twelve years of my life, I had played a very
dangerous drug seeking game with myself, my family, friends and the
community. I had lied, cheated, stole and destroyed everything
around me. I did not do this because I had a bad childhood. I did
not do this because I had been mistreated or didn't have
opportunities. I started drugs due to my own inability to face
problems in my life and communicate to those around me as to what
was really going on and how I felt. I also believed that drugs
couldn't hurt and that I could control my use. This was not the case
and is not for millions of Americans today.
I had people who tried to help but I felt there was no way out. I
felt that all I could be was a drug addict. Then there was Mom with
that plane ride home and I took it and went into rehab. Now, they
didn't have all those "PhDs" and they didn't have the hospital beds
or group meetings but they did have the way out. The staff were
there to supervise me and pick me up when I fell but I achieved
today's freedom from drugs by doing those courses and applying the
materials to my life. It was nothing short of a miracle and this is
coming from a 12 year drug using veteran who could manipulate the
system as good as anyone.
It has been nearly five years since that day in the airport, I am
now married, and I help to get other people free from drugs. I have
met so many wonderful, caring people that it's a joy to wake up in
the morning and say that I am drug free. Just ask my mom, a soul is
not something you waste. She'll tell you. Thanks and may the Creator
work through us all for the betterment of mankind no matter your
religion, race or economic status."
