Drug Rehab Success - Holly's Story

"My name is Holly Conklin. The story I have to tell is true. I was a very successful public speaker, I owned my own business, my own house, owned 2 very nice cars and am the single mother of two beautiful children. I had money in the bank and a long term plan for the future. Sound perfect? Actually, it was.

I never thought the perfect life, that I had set up so well, would end they way it did, but it did. Having been single for many years and finally meeting the man of my dreams I thought I really had it all. I was 38 years old, totally successful and extremely happy with what life had to offer me. What happened next in my life changed the entire course for myself, my children and my family.

Two days before Christmas in 2003, just 2 weeks after my Fiancés birthday and 3 weeks away from a well planned wedding, Cody, the man of my dreams, was killed in a motorcycle accident, two houses away from my own, while I stood in the front yard in horrified disbelief. He died in my arms right there in my neighbors' front yard. I thought I would die too and wished I could many times thereafter.

The events that followed seem unreal to me now. I had suffered a loss that stripped me of my ability to function in every day life. In a desperate attempt to be normal in some way, I turned to drugs to kill the pain I felt on a daily basis. Drugs that I thought would help me function in some normal capacity. I started with marijuana, then moved on to prescription pain killers and alcohol and then finally to methamphetamine.

Soon after, I stopped working, stopped being a mother and soccer coach to my children, stopped being a daughter to my parents and stopped being a sister to my siblings. I just stopped. My life was suspended in time and there was methamphetamine and there was nothing else. After spending every dime on hand and everything in my savings, I began selling the drugs to support my habit. It didn't take long for me to lose everything, my children, our home, my business, my vehicles and I was on the verge of losing my freedom. I was in serious legal trouble and had no hope in ever living a happy productive life without those drugs.

With the support and unconditional love of my family I came to this program. I learned that addiction can be overcome, with certainty. I was able to cleanse the toxins out of my body that caused me to crave the drugs daily. I learned how to take what comes at me and handle it instead of reacting to it. I learned how to solve problems. I learned how to face my life and have confronted all the things within it that caused me guilt and have made up the damage to my children and family. In short, I am whole again, producing again, happy again and alive again.

After graduating the program and returning home I was so successful in my sobriety that finally I made the decision to come back and help others achieve the same success and that's what we do every day. I wanted to be a part of the staff that worked so hard and cared so much and I am. I have never been happier nor have I ever had a job with such incredible rewards. I watch people come in our front doors absolutely broken, with broken lives, broken bodies, broken families, broken hearts, and broken dreams. I see them come through addiction and out the other side, whole, beautiful, vital, important and productive people. It's simply amazing.

I'm not sure how you thank an organization for giving you the opportunity to have your life back, but I try every day to contribute in some way toward that end.
