Drug Rehab Success - Lisa's Story
"I had a great life. One filled with family members that loved and
supported me in all my endeavors. I made good grades, my parents
were supportive of me and the things I was interested in doing. I
was a good softball and tennis player and won several awards for my
accomplishments. There was absolutely no reason for someone raised
in the environment I was raised in to use drugs, but one day a
boyfriend enticed me to try marijuana, and the marijuana led me to
cocaine and then someone talked me into trying crack cocaine, and
before I knew it my life was totally out of focus.
What was I doing to myself and those who loved me? By the time I
asked myself that question, I was already in the downhill spiral. I
was in too deep and was stealing from my family; lying to everyone
and using every cent I could make or find to support my habit. I
didn't start using drugs until I was 16, but I became addicted very
quickly and my life was a mess.
When I graduated from high school, my family knew that I possibly
had a problem but didn't realize it was so severe until I was 21. I
left for college but ended up dropping out and moving into a bad,
strenuous environment that just made my drug abuse and how I felt
about myself even worse.
My Mom cried and pleaded with me every day to return home so she
could help me get the help I needed. After about 2 years of constant
struggles and turmoil in my life, I finally returned home, because I
realized that I needed help that I couldn't get anywhere else. My
addiction at this point was an every three-day event, whereby I
would stay out all night and use and then I'd return home the next
day and be very remorseful and would apologize and promise that it
would never happen again. At the time I made those promises, I
believed I could stop on my own. But, I just kept on using and
disappointing everyone in my life.
I went to a local outpatient facility and had group and individual
sessions but it just didn't work for me, I needed something else and
just didn't know what that was at the time. I knew crack cocaine was
powerful, but why couldn't I just stop? When I would stay out all
night, my Mom would never sleep, she would go around to all the
places she thought I'd be and put herself at risk to just find me
and stop me from using. She always said that she'd never give up on
me, because she had faith that I could beat it.
One Thursday I left work for a therapy appointment and had planned
on just one rock, but that's not what happened. One led to two and
on and on until I was gone for three days, which was longer than I
had ever been away, and I knew then that everyone would be so hurt.
I realized I needed more help than the outpatient therapy was
providing. While I was gone my Mom had been on the Internet and gave
me copies of the information from all the programs she had found.
On Monday I made the calls and talked with each program, and when I
talked with the staff of this rehab something really clicked and I
knew that they could help me become drug free. I left on Wednesday,
January 22, 2003 for Oklahoma and that's when my life changed.
The program was just what I needed to put my life in the right
direction. Since I completed the program 12 months ago today (March
19, 2003), my life has had some ups and downs (as Mom says, life
isn't always easy), but I am happier than I have been since I was
15.
I married the man of my dreams, who stood by me and helped me
conquer my addiction. I have a stepson, my own house, work in the
family business, have a great relationship with my parents (Mom
still gets on my nerves occasionally because she still worries about
me – but I guess that isn't all bad).
Thank you to the program and staff! One year after graduation I am
drug-free and happy!"
Sincerely,
L.D.B. - Program Graduate.
