Drug Rehab Success - Miriam's Story
"When I was 15 years old, I started down the road to chaos and
drug addiction. I felt like I didn't fit in anywhere and I had no
tools to confront my life. I thought that drugs were my only
solution.
Despite having seen many friends of mine become degraded heroin
addicts, I felt like the fleeting peace that I got from using heroin
was worth it. I was using heroin, cocaine, LSD, marijuana and
anything else I could get my hands on and my life quickly started
sliding out of control.
When I was 17, I packed up a backpack and decided to leave my
hometown because I thought that leaving my old scene would solve the
problems that I was creating for myself and like I could avoid the
drug addiction I was spiraling down into. After being homeless for
over two years, sleeping outside, in alleyways or on other people's
floors, I realized that running away was not the answer so I moved
back and continued using while my parents and four little brothers
watched me fall apart.
My parents got me into a traditional rehab. At that point I
wanted to quit, but after 30 days, I still didn't have the tools to
handle my life and immediately started back down the same road.
After finishing my 12-step program I moved away again thinking my
fate was to die a drug addict and not wanting my parents and
brothers to see it.
I had a pager and my Dad paged me every day to make sure that I
was still alive. One day he said that he had gotten on the internet
and found this place and I could go there to handle my life. I
didn't think I could do it.
On the fourth of July I was walking around on the streets and I
looked up at the sky where all of these beautiful fireworks were
exploding and I thought, "my life isn't meant to be like this" and
just sat down and cried. I called my Dad and he immediately got one
of my brothers to pick me up and take me in for treatment.
When I got to the program I was an emotionally stripped and
totally degraded being. Through doing the courses here, which was
the hardest thing I had ever done in my life, I learned how to
confront myself and my problems. I learned how to be comfortable
with myself and got to actually find out why I had begun using drugs
in the first place and handle those issues. I had this overwhelming
sense of peace and felt, for the first time in my life, like I had
the ability to handle any situation and find solutions instead of
being the total effect of my environment. Piece by piece, my life
started getting put back together again. Each step of the program
built upon the last until at the end I knew with certainty that I
would never have to use another drug again in my life.
After almost four years I am still free of drugs and alcohol. I
have my life and happiness back and I owe this all to this program."
